Planning a trip to Japan? Start your preparations by researching the culture, habits, and customs.
Japan is a fascinating destination year-round, but it is definitely at its most beautiful in the spring, as that is the only time you can witness the cherry blossoms. However, keep in mind that this is also when the crowds are at their peak.
Once you decide on your travel dates, it is essential to look into the local culture and customs that must be respected during your stay. Tradition is highly valued, and certain rules of etiquette apply whether you are a tourist or not. In the Land of the Rising Sun, safety is at the highest possible level; it is one of the safest countries in the world. Using public transport is perfectly safe, but there are a few rules to keep in mind. Every day, you will see railway staff in white gloves pushing passengers into trains. Due to the overcrowding of public transport, this is a common occurrence. While the pushing is expected, any conversation on trains is discouraged. Your phone should be on silent during the ride, and any talking should be kept to a minimum and in a very controlled tone. Eating and drinking on trains is prohibited. For longer distances, the railway offers a service where you can get refreshments, but only in the designated areas.
Beyond transportation, you are also expected to be quiet in temples. Temples are sacred places; upon entering, remove your sunglasses, hat, or cap. Be quiet and do not take photos where "no photography" signs are posted; the locals will be very grateful.
Service in restaurants and cafes is top-notch, but tips are not expected in return—on the contrary, tipping is considered an insult. Servers believe it is simply the job they are paid for.
If you are a sushi lover, you must try it in Japan. In traditional restaurants, you will be given wooden chopsticks instead of cutlery. If you struggle with chopsticks, eat with your hands; do not ask for silverware. Do not feed each other and do not point your chopsticks at others; this is considered extremely rude, as is pouring your own alcoholic drink.
When paying, do not use just one hand and never hand money directly to the vendor. There is a small tray for money at the checkout where you should place it. This clearly shows there is no bribery or other criminal activity, while also showing respect for the person in front of you.
Geishas and their traditions are particularly interesting to tourists; however, do not disturb them or ask them to pose for photos. Touching is strictly forbidden.
If you are lucky enough to be hosted in someone’s home, it is mandatory to remove your shoes before entering.
It may seem like there are too many rules that go against your habits, but if you make an effort to follow them, your hosts will be very appreciative. Ultimately, what matters most is your intention and willingness to follow the rules; even if you make a mistake, they won't hold it against you too much.
