Did you know that Milan once looked similar to Venice? The city was crisscrossed by a network of navigable canals (Navigli) used for transporting goods, including the massive marble blocks from which the Duomo was built. The most interesting part of the story is connected to Leonardo da Vinci. When he stayed in Milan at the end of the 15th century, he designed and perfected a system of advanced river locks with angled doors, which allowed ships to overcome height differences in water levels. His sketches and mechanisms can still be seen today on the Conca di Viarenna canal. 1. Duomo and the Cathedral Rooftop: The symbol of the city and perhaps the most photographed location. Do not just go inside or take a photo in front of it. Buy a ticket for the rooftop (Terrazze) and walk among hundreds of spired towers and statues. The view of the city on a sunny day is unforgettable.
2. Sforza Castle and Sempione Park: The former residence of Milanese dukes is today a cultural center with museums. Right behind the castle stretches a huge park perfect for escaping the city bustle.
3. The Hidden Church of San Bernardino alle Ossa: For fans of unusual and slightly dark history, this church hides a small chapel whose walls are entirely decorated with human skulls and bones from the 13th century.
4. Brera District: A romantic, artistic neighborhood with paved streets, small galleries, antique shops, and beautiful cafes. An oasis for enjoying conversations over an excellent espresso and some sweet Italian pastries.

Forget about pizza and spaghetti for a moment; Milan has its own cult dishes that you must try.

1. Trattoria Milanese (Via Santa Marta 11): The perfect place for a traditional lunch. Make sure to order Risotto alla Milanese (creamy rice with saffron that gives it a golden color) and Cotoletta alla Milanese (breaded veal cutlet fried in butter).
2. Luini (Via Santa Radegonda 16): Located right behind the Duomo cathedral, this establishment has been making the best panzerotto (dough stuffed with mozzarella and tomato, then fried) since 1888. The lines are long but move quickly, and the price is extremely affordable.
